Becoming an artist

One random day in 2021 I received a sudden spark of inspiration to learn how to draw, so then and there I decided it would be my life mission to become an artist. In the early days I put the focus on finding joy in drawing instead of improving my technique because I knew this would take me further than any single lesson can. I started with a leather backed sketchbook and a pen. I liked the feel of leather in my hand and the aesthetic of black pen on off-white paper. An unintentional bonus of using a pen is that it forced me to make a mark and move on, curing my perfectionism. With pencil I would spend so much time drawing and erasing and drawing and erasing trying to get it just right. Practicing art became fun and something that I’d want to do all the time. I strategically placed my sketchbook and pen on my nightstand so it would be within reach at the end of everyday. In order to be more consistent with my practice I started making promises to myself. First I promised myself I would open my sketchbook every single day. There was no promise of actually drawing in it. The act of holding it counted as a success in my book, anything more was extra credit. Such a small promise made it crazy easy to follow through. It's pretty hard to make an excuse to not pick up a book and put it back down. After that became a natural part of my routine I upped my promise to make at least one mark everyday, then to fill one whole page everyday. Around this time I started to venture out into more mediums. I was mostly making garbage and messes with paint, but I enjoyed it and that's all that mattered to me. Once playing with art was a natural habit for me I started to focus more on improving technique and expanding my knowledge. I took note of where I felt I could improve and then I’d watch a youtube video or two to give me some pointers. I like to keep art fun and not too study heavy so I like to keep a 20:80 balance. 20% of my art time would go to learning and the other 80% I had the freedom to create whatever I wanted to. Eventually I started to produce art that I actually liked and wanted to share with people. So here I am making a whole website dedicated to my art and the journey I’ve had with it. I am proud of the progress I’ve made so far, but the story is far from over.
